This historic seaport first settled in 1623 is the oldest fishing port on the East Coast of the United States and has one of the finest harbors in Massachusetts. Its fishing tradition has been immortalized in Rudyard Kiplings' "Captain Courageous" and more recently by Sebastian Jungers' "The Perfect Storm." As part of Cape Ann, Gloucester contains a balanced mix of industries from fishing, technology, and tourism to publishing. It is an island made up of a number of small seaside villages, each with its own distinctive character. The city's natural beauty has attracted painters from all over the world, and an increasing number of film producers are using Gloucester and Cape Ann as locales. While many people come for our lovely beaches, sailing, whale watching and fresh seafood, the community combines large areas of protected land ideal for hiking and camping. Cultural attractions include a local symphony orchestra and several museums which highlight the areas rich heritage.
